Similar to Va Savoir in some ways, this explores the creative process as well as how theater and life become one through actors rehearsing for a play. The setting is classic Rivette, almost too obvious - a strange mansion with many secrets. While this deals with Rivette's themes more rigorously than Va Savoir and might be his most self-reflexive and personal film, this doesn't work very well in a more conventional narrative sense. The male characters are among the least interesting and the chemistry between Birkin and Chaplin doesn't approach the level of spontanety of Berto/Labourier or Berto/Ogier.
