Movie Info

The effects of urban renewal on the poor are explored by filmmakers Derreck Roemer and Neil Graham in this documentary concerning the effort made by developers to transform a crumbling inner-city hotel from a hideout for the homeless to an arts hotspot. When developers purchased the Gladstone Hotel back in 2000, they thought it was empty. Much to their surprise, however, the crew in charge of the project soon comes into contact with benevolent chambermaid Marilyn, cynical front-desk clerk Shirley Ann, and a ragtag group of residents who have taken to calling the decrepit monolith their home. While the developers concoct an ambitious plan for gradual restoration while the staff and residents remain in the upstairs level and the ground level stocks designer drinks, the plan quickly bottoms out and Christina Zeidler is faced with the thankless task of starting over from scratch. Despite her efforts to create "a business model that includes social change," Zeidler finds herself caught in an uphill battle when city inspectors claim that the wiring in the building needs a complete overhaul, an exploding boiler leaves the hotel in the cold, the walls and ceiling begin to give way, and everyone who called the building home is forced to leave. Shot over the course of five years, Roemer and Graham's film offers a revealing exposé on the effects of urban renewal on the homeless and the inadvertent gentrification caused by inner-city artists. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
