Movie Info

Rodolphe Marcnoi's The Last Day concerns the troubled history of a family. Eighteen-year-old Simon (Gaspard Ulliel) meets the attractive 17-year-old Louise (Melanie Laurent) while he travels on a train to spend Christmas with his family. She joins him on his visit home. Simon's mother, Marie (Nicole Garcia), is happy to see her son, but dad (Christophe Malavoy) loves to complain and harass his family, and sister Alice (Alysson Paradis) competes fiercely with her brother. The family mistakenly believes that Simon and Louise are intimately involved with each other. Eventually, their interactions reveal buried truths about various members of the family.

Audience Reviews for Le Dernier jour (The Last Day)

Four desperate people on vacation in Brittany discover shocking things about one another over the course of their holiday. By turns touching, obnoxious, uncomfortable, and sad, I had no idea of the motivations of the major characters or why they withheld information from one another until it was too late. The character of Simon is an "artist," which apparently excuses him for doing inexplicable things like sniffing a post-coital mattress and filming himself shoving his head through a glass window. Why don't people just have sex? Is coming of age en Français this difficult, really? I thought this was supposed to be a gay film, but I think maybe the main character is just an idiot. I did appreciate how they didn't spell out everything for an Anglophone audience, and let the audience figure out the mother's secrets by piecing together snippets of dialogue.

Ulliel's performance in this film is absolutely spectacular. The film itself is sweet, disturbing, and tragic all in one. A brilliant watch for any fan of Gaspard Ulliel or of French films.
