Grand and undersized, truncated and overlong, The Last Samurai reminds us just enough of what epics used to be to disappoint.

A rare example of a great movie but horrible fiction.

Nearly all of The Last Samurai's deficiencies spring from the screenplay... As respectful as it is about the similarities of different cultures, it also doesn't quite elude an aura of noble otherness.

A squishy, serious-minded lesson about embracing one's heritage and cherishing the virtues of valor and respect.

I sat through it twice. Yes, it is well produced but still panders to a megastar.

It's wannabe-ism on a multimillion-dollar scale, with an icon of Japanese culture somehow crudely penetrated by an interloper and turned inside out.

Watching it is a frustrating experience: you can see what it strives for, only to have that potential snatched away time and again.

Disappointingly content to recycle familiar attitudes about the nobility of ancient cultures, Western despoilment of them, liberal historical guilt, the unrestrainable greed of capitalists and the irreducible primacy of Hollywood movie stars.

One long, faintly uninspiring experience.

The real point of the film seems to be the poster image of a battle-ready Tom Cruise waving a sword and all decked out in gleaming red-and-black samurai armor.

Zwick has no flair for the supposedly awesome battle scene that should have closed The Last Samurai.

Llittle more than a longer, less violent and more pretentious version of 'Kill Bill.' The difference, of course, is that 'Kill Bill' was meant to be a goof.

The more you think about it, the worse it gets. What begins as stirring twaddle ends with such absurd self-regard from Tom Cruise that there is not a dry pair of underpants in the house.

Competently mounted in its studiedly immersive, elongated way, Zwick's earnest costume epic dresses a knee-jerk, reactionary sensibility in exotic garb.

Tom Cruise and $140 million might get you a marathon movie, but The Last Samurai lacks the little things that keep it from feeling that way.

It's a film at war with itself. Worse, it's a mixed bag of carefully packaged entertainment, with little room for spontaneity or surprise.

'The Last Samurai' has pretensions to Kurosawa, but it got stuck in the viscous goop of soft soap.

[S]o innocuous that it's barely even there, blending into the beige walls of inoffensive mediocrity.
