Last Summer suffers from a sparse storyline which will make it too slow for many, but Thiedeman's moody camerawork gives the film a lyrical quality that perfectly captures the sadness of a season about to end. Go to Full Review

One of the finest directorial debuts of recent years is Mark Thiedeman's. Here a young helmer paints the screen with complex textures and sound, perfectly capturing the joys and throes of teens in love in a very small Arkansas town. Go to Full Review

05/20/2017 The beginning is incomprehensible. The pace is glacial. Then, as the story gently unfolds, it makes sense and, to these eyes, almost unbearable beautiful. See more 04/15/2016 Boring. Static scenes of skin, too many sounds of chirping birds and the directing interferes wupith what can be an interesting story. The director should give up movies and paint stills so he is less confused by his "Art" See more 09/17/2015 Dull to the point of sleep inducement. Some nice shots but for such a short movie it seems interminable. See more 03/04/2015 Slow, languid, beautiful, erotic without sex, just take it nice and slow. Beautiful photography, patterns and color. See more 02/14/2015 Beautiful & lovely, really. See more 11/27/2014 A beautifully lyrical film that places the fleeting moments of childhood with the lazy days of summer, Last Summer is a meditation on growing up and holding on to what is left behind. The cinematography is spectacular, the performances are languid and subtle, reminiscent of Terrence Malick's Tree of Life, but more grounded without the grand all encompassing implications. Instead, Last Summer is a small personal moment, that manages to be a universal expression of the joys and pains of moving on from the comfort of solenoid and becoming comfortable with the potential of adulthood.
