Le nom des gens (The Names of Love) Reviews

August 6, 2019
Every bit as anonymous and lost as its cartoonish, cookie cutter characters, who whittle down the cultural complexities of a diverse France into a stale and toothless romantic comedy.

Inspires a strange fascination, thanks mostly to an sometimes awe-inspiring indifference to matters of propriety or good taste.

It's commendable to want to mix serious ideas and emotional complexity into a light comedy, but you need to have a point that goes deeper than "bigotry is bad."
August 17, 2011
A meretricious mix of lechery, kitsch, bad taste, and glib political correctness.
July 7, 2011
The movie never really decides what it's about, and its odd-couple romance is stale and unpersuasive.

I'm not saying that seriousness and nudity cannot coexist, even in France, but the mix of gravitas and friskiness here is annoyingly superficial. The film's tone is "crowd-pleasing," but which crowd exactly is being pleased?
June 24, 2011
A film that isn't sure if it's a political statement on Muslim/Jewish relations or an "Annie Hall" homage.
June 24, 2011
Strained and mildly amusing.
June 24, 2011
From madcap to moronic.
June 22, 2011
Semi-autobiographical drama from the improbable romance between a square, middle-aged French Jew and a fiery young "leftie" of North African descent is a cinematic descent into meandering self-indulgence and questionable taste.
June 22, 2011
Too giddy about its own nonconformism to keep the laughs going from start to finish.
June 22, 2011
The real query is how much insufferable Gallic tweeness you can stand before simply shouting "no, merci!"
June 21, 2011
The pathetic attempts at outr, taboo-busting humor as sociopolitical commentary can't disguise what this film really is: a mawkish, MOR comedy of manners that even its straw man Nicolas Sarkozy would find suitable for date night.
