Movie Info

As America's stock of athletic young men is depleted during World War II, a professional all-female baseball league springs up in the Midwest, funded by publicity-hungry candy maker Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall). Competitive sisters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) spar with each other, scout Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) and grumpy has-been coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) on their way to fame. Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell co-star as two of the sisters' teammates.

If you've been watching Glow and haven't seen this, take a step back in time, you'll enjoy it immensely. The beginning comes off a bit schmaltzy but stick with it, it's a funny, fitting tribute to a baseball story few others than Penny Marshall seem to have cared to tell.

Marshall lays the sappiness a bit thick (always her biggest problem) and I'm not sure the scenes set in "modern day" that open and close the film are even necessary, but the ensemble is so fantastic and the movie is so entertaining and funny that I don't really care.

Although it stars Hanks and Madonna the film really belongs to Davis. A snapshot of a specific time in history the film can be a bit syrupy sweet sometimes but Hanks' drunken coach keeps the whole thing on track and the chemistry between him and Davis is strong. A great film to see some impressive acting talent in supporting roles before they were famous.

So glad to finally see such an iconic piece of Evansville history! Bosse Field, America's third oldest ballpark, plays the home of the Racine Belles, and boy does she nail it!
