Cuban actress Lena has spent years trying to make it on Broadway. Despite her great beauty and obvious talent, it has been to no avail -- to the subtly racist producers and directors she auditions for, she is too light-skinned to play servants and too dark to play wealthy socialites. Her boyfriend Mike, a former actor, wants her to leave the stage and settle down to matrimony and maternity, but, ever the eternal optimist, Lena still hopes that she will become a star. To this end, Lena's 32nd birthday celebration is fraught with ill-concealed anxiety and the knowledge that she must choose whether to follow Mike or the footlights.
