Ellie N @EllieN Jun 13 I won't lie, I think the main advantage for this film is its cast. Great young actors all around: Isabela Merced, who I actually know originally from Instant Family, always shines in these subdued emotional roles and Kiernan Shripka was literally Sabrina, I love her comedic timing in this. I forgot the name of the male leads, but one of them was a love interest in Descendants and was great too, though I guess Shripka and Merced stood out a bit more to me. The actor who played the famous artist also played him very well, though I'm not familiar with him and his character's backstory was apparently changed from the book (I doubt it's because they cast a black actor unless they were dumb enough to think black = famous artist and not Jewish, so it just seems like a plot they wanted to try and good grief if I see people complaining about his ethnicity specifically, please get a life). All in all it was fun, comforting, funny at times and rewatchable in winter. But I didn't read the book. On the positive side, the movie has a warm, festive atmosphere and occasionally charming moments between characters. The cast is decent, and some storylines—especially the more grounded romantic ones—manage to feel light and entertaining enough to hold attention. However, the film often feels uneven. With so many plot threads competing for time, most characters don’t get enough depth, and some arcs feel rushed or underdeveloped. The dialogue can also lean toward cliché, and the emotional stakes never fully land as strongly as intended. Overall, it’s not terrible, but it’s not particularly memorable either—an easy, seasonal watch with flaws. 5/10.
