L'éventreur de Notre-Dame (The Sadist of Notre Dame) (1979)

Movie Info

Demoniac originally went out as Ripper of Notre Dame. Director Jess Franco, discreetly avoiding his given name of Jesus Franco, plays the title role. He's fun to watch in a disgusting sort of way, but the production values and supporting cast don't come up to his admittedly unexacting standards. Lots of slashing, lots of nudity, little sense-but you probably guessed that when you read the title. The film also exists in a hard-core pornographic version titled Exorcism and Black Masses, available at off-brand video rental shops. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Jess Franco plops more unwatchable crap in a dark, forgotten corner of cinematic history. It wasn't enough for him to be only a lousy director this time. He casts himself as a star, too, thus ensuring that this will be a stinker even by the standard of his many other bad movies. Avoid this at all costs!

This one went a long way towards confirming that I prefer the dreamy weirdness of Jean Rollin's softcore nudie fests to the sleazier action one might catch in the work of one Jess Franco, because the chipmunk-cheeked hotness of Lina Romay aside, there's not a lot to really recommend this one. I think I need the artsy approach of Rollin to make this sort of thing worthwhile to me, while Franco just seems to want to leer a bit more than I find necessary. Passable, maybe worth a rental?

Strange little Franco number that does not deal in real exorcism or black masses but istead in simulated ones. Even when they have a real black mass, the sacrifices are still fake--only the orgy is real. Somewhat of a slasher film, somewhat of sexploitation flick, Excorcism is an interesting piece in the Franco canon, but not one of my favorites.
