Despite its thin plot, Liar Liar is elevated by Jim Carrey's exuberant brand of physical humor, and the result is a laugh riot that helped to broaden the comedian's appeal. Read critic reviews

All Critics (62) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (51) | Rotten (11)

  • I would tell you that this is a loud, obvious, one-joke movie, but most of you would run out and pony up the eight bucks to see it anyway.

  • Pretty funny, at least during those moments when it doesn't turn into goo.

    April 7, 2020 | Full Review…
  • Carrey has never been better - that is to say funnier, or more controlled. He's reached a higher performance plateau here, playing a real human being we care about rather than a goon figure.

    March 21, 2017 | Full Review…
  • Jim Carrey entertains himself mightily, and his enthusiasm is infectious.

    September 7, 2011 | Rating: B | Full Review…
  • Close to an ideal jumping-off point for Carrey, who spends the better part of an hour grotesquely physicalizing his scummy lawyer's struggle with being obliged to utter cold, hard facts.

    November 21, 2008
  • Pretty rudimentary, but it keeps Carrey's occasional over-exuberance in check and delivers likeable, effective, but decidedly mainstream comedy.

Audience Reviews for Liar Liar

Sometimes I think it would be nice to live in a world where everyone has to tell the truth.

Liar Liar is easily one of Jim Carrey's most over-the-top performances. The premise of a lawyer not being able to tell a lie for 24 hours because his son made it his birthday wish is clearly an implausible one, but if you can put that aside, you're in for a funny and sweet movie. Carrey is always fun to watch. It takes a good 45 minutes for things to get really good, but final act is fantastic movie magic.

The story is clever and to top it off, the over-the-top hysteria of one Jim Carrey gives audiences every reason to laugh. Liar Liar gives the honest-to-God truth and keeps you laughing towards the end. 5/5

A cliche father son relationship is the only thing holding this movie back. Otherwise, this is one of Jim Carrey's best films! The hysterical dialogue, the unforgettable performance by Carrey, and the hilarious situations make this a must watch!
