This is a confident debut, clearly extensively researched, put together with great care and makes for a welcome addition to the canon of queer period dramas. Go to Full Review

Lilies look is reminiscent the cinema of Merchant Ivory, especially Maurice, but Seefried’s tonal and genre shifts are jarring leaving the viewer feeling as traumatized as the onscreen characters—but, perhaps, that’s exactly the point. Go to Full Review

Lilies Not For Me is a gut-wrenching drama that revisits a neglected, dark period in queer history through the hazy lens of a complex love triangle. Go to Full Review

Jens B @Jens97 1d The contrast between the idyllic imagery—with its dreamy, atmospheric lighting—and the horror befalling the characters is brutal. This intimate drama, featuring only a handful of characters, is acted with such sensitivity and employs such a compelling, intricate narrative structure that one readily forgives Will Seefried’s feature debut for its occasionally meandering pace and its sometimes unfocused storytelling. See more Lulu J @CallMeLulu 5d This film is sheer flight of fancy by the writer/director. That's ok--but it's fantasy, not historically-based fiction. The first 1/3 is compelling and worthwhile. Then a radical plot twist kicks in throwing away everything built to that point, making the characters unrecognizable. Abruptly the film veers onto a dehumanizing, grotesque trajectory lasting the remainder of the film. Ostensibly this plot pivot is to "prove" to modern audiences how primitive and barbaric not that the medical field was in 1920, generally, but homophobia was so virulent that doctors regularly practiced physical mutilations on gay men. In fact--not to reveal a spoiler--what happens in this film never did occur in England. It was theory of an Austrian scientist. That's bad enough but instead of a film exploration into what *could have* theoretically happened if a physician ran amok--the movie implies this was commonly happening to gay men. Hyperbole masquerading as proof of historical systemic oppression. See more Gerard M. @gmcc1 Mar 11 So great to see a movie like this with depth and substance.
