A poetic masterpiece..

Often called Jean Rollin's most personal film, Lips of Blood is yet another erotic vampire film with artistic aspirations from a director who goes to the well a little too often. While there are interesting moments that focus on the nature of memory and its connection with trauma and horror, the film as a whole does little to distinguish itself from Rollin's other films or erotic vampire films from the 70s more generally.

(1975) Lips Of Blood/ Lèvres de sang
(In French with English subtitles)
EROTIC ADULT HORROR

Low budget and short with a time limit of less than an hour and a half which is not scary nor it is erotic. The film has nudity scenes and the making out is corny and fake but did make an impact during it's initial release in 1975 which centers on a young man taken back as a result of a photo of some old ruins he remembers when he was a child, and at the same time becoming attracted to this young lady he knows nothing about except that the last time he had ever saw her was at some old ruins. And coincidently the ruins was part of a marketing campaign to sale perfume that his mother was part of. He then goes on an odyssey to find those ruins even if it meant costing some peoples lives.

Directed by the king of low budget erotic horror movies by the name of Jean Rollin, this vampire flick is very hard to ignore because Rollin's vampires are not the same vampires most people are totally accustomed to. The difference with these vampires is that some very drunk people that I know wouldn't mind being sucked by these kinds of vampires as they're always walking around with see- through scowls. And they seldom turn into bats for all they are capable to have some of the same characteristics as a human. It's reminiscent to something what low budget director Ed Wood would do if he were alive today except that Rollin involves nudity and fake looking gory violence.

Sparked by an image he sees on a postcard, a man starts having visions of a girl he met and fell in love with when he was 12; mysterious people try to stop him from finding the castle in the photograph, while twin vampires in see-through nighties help him from afar. Slow-moving atmospheric horror drama with lots of sex and nudity (that's the Jean Rollin way), but it drags at times and the ending has little payoff.

One of, if not THE best film by the brilliant, Jean Rollin! Surrealism at its best!

An interesting vampire movie from Rollin, not good, not bad, just interesting. It's atmospheric and exotic like most of his work. The story is mysterious and a bit confusing too. Overall, it's an okay movie.

The few Rollin films that ive seen have come across as surreal grim fairy tales with the photography and the gothic locations that transend the budget constraints. And thats how a true film artist does it. He knows how to manipulate the low budget to become a part of the atmosphere and lets you focus on the beauty he created.
Lips Of Blood is a beautiful film and from my limited experience with Rollin his most linear in terms of plot. There is very little dialogue which was a good thing because those subtitles were pretty fast at times. The female vampires are typical of 60's - 70's Euro vampires in terms of them being extremly seductive while being able to walk through scenes in a blank gaze. Annie Brilland not only has the main protaginist under her spell but she also had me.
This is a masterpeice!

Ignore this disgraceful and terrible cover from Redemption Film Distributors. This is a graceful and erotic film, from cinematic master Jean Rollin!

Quite possibly the worst vampire movie EVER! People just walk around and things happen without a reason. And the women with fangs looks so stupid!

Average French horror film from Jean Rollins that is about on par with other Rollins film high doses of style and sex, while low on substance and blood. Story revolves around a man that is obsessed with a picture of ruins that he remembered as a child, and now he wants to find them again. Wow excitement!

Jean Rollin again. Like most of his work, it's beautiful, lots of naked girls running around, but end the end it lacks substance. If you just want to watch something pretty this is for you. Not bad to do every once in awhile.
