If the rule is "show, don't tell," then Liyana is a success.
The children's stories alone would have been compelling, but illustrating them in this medium adds even more depth, nuance and emotion.
A film for enterprising, discussion-inclined parents and teachers to share with their own young ones, passing the story on in the process.
As tough as the subject matter may get at times, the film is guaranteed to be an uplifting one for viewers of all ages, with its emphasis placed on the joy of its subjects, whether it be in their everyday life or in the midst of their creative process.
There are ways in which "Liyana" might seem to put too rosy a spin on its subject matter, but it shows the optimism and self-awareness that can come from creativity.
A spirited testament to the power of creativity - not only as a source of strength and joy, but as a way to access buried emotions.
It's that collective experience that carries the emotional heft of Liyana as she becomes a kaleidoscopic mirror of the storytellers' experiences with challenges that make them unsafe.
Sweetly entertaining despite the horrors it hints at, Liyana is a snapshot of a larger story with plenty of potential for a happy ending.
A Swazi wonder.
The visually innovative documentary is a testament to the healing power of storytelling.
"Liyana" is an innovative blend of documentary and animation that tells a moving story of resiliency and the power of imagination.
It never hurts to be reminded of how powerful storytelling actually is. Not in an airy, abstract way, but: empirically, emphatically and literally.
