It's packed with brilliant filmmaking touches and carries a strong kick.

Toni Servillo is perfection as Berlusconi right down to the transplanted hairline - a social chameleon, pathetically in denial that he's ageing and still wanting to party like a 20-year-old.

Loro's narrative gaps are a result of it originally being two films that have here been condensed into one 150-minute job. But between Servillo's brilliance...and Sorrentino's majestic scene orchestration, you may be too agog to notice.

As a character portrait, this film works: Servillo judges the amount of charm, bluster and oiliness just right. His Silvio slithers and fascinates, like a snake.

The film at times feels like a VR trip inside Berlusconi's mind.

By keeping Berlusconi in the wings, Sorrentino builds up the mystique of 'lui, lui' while also showing it to be a convenient excuse.
April 19, 2019
It's tonally all over the place, and significant characters disappear without warning. Yet the force and style of the storytelling, plus Toni Servillo's bravura performance as Berlusconi, often paper over those cracks.

Loro is messy, unfocussed, excessive, but often spellbinding.

Toni Servillo brilliant again as Sorrentino's singular Berlusconi,

Party politics abound in Paolo Sorrentino's imaginative portrait of Sergio Berlusconi as an ageing, empty salesman-cum-seducer.
April 18, 2019
Like Berlusconi himself, Loro is bloated and overstuffed, but Sorrentino's film is a compelling mixture of the whimsical and the sleazy, the hedonistic and the sad.

The performances are exceptional, the production values impeccable. But this version feels consistently hamstrung by its structural flaws and tonal misjudgements.

Toni Servillo is compelling as ever, but there's not enough bite here.

Just like Berlusconi, it is misogynistic, tacky, morally and politically vacuous. Again, like Silvio, it thinks it's funny, but it most assuredly isn't.

The mood has darkened irrevocably and the closing scenes of devastation at L'Aquila seem to point up something much bigger than Berlusconi, something sinister at the heart of Italian statehood.

Despite its uneven pacing and structure, there are individual moments that astound.

Hard to say what it is, beyond a sprawling mess that caters so exclusively to the male gaze it makes The Wolf of Wall Street look like a children's tea party.

Loro drips with glittering artifice. What could be more Berlusconi?

Sometimes whimsical, sometimes gruellingly sordid, sometimes wayward in those Fellini-esque departures and dreamlike epiphanies of which Sorrentino has made himself such a master.

For a director obsessed with the decadence of Italy's most powerful, Loro feels like the film Paolo Sorrentino was born to make.
