A nice surprise, even all of it's imperfections make this film great. [Full review in Spanish]
A movie that takes risks, challenges its audience with transgressive ideas, stays away from conventional Puritanism, and embraces the dark side of teens. [Full review in Spanish]
The truth is that the movie is so dull that it completely fails to have any (artistic or otherwise) representation of the problems of the youth nowdays. [Full review in Spanish]
Don't know what to really say about this movie in all honesty. Part of me wants to say that it's about as honest and disturbing a look into what bullying and marginalization does to a young mind. On that front, I honestly don't think I've seen a film like this. I don't wanna say it portrays things super accurately, but I can see how someone going through the same issues Aritz is going through might be able to relate to him on a level that many other films dealing with this subject matter fail to do. And I'm not even talking from personal experience because, thankfully, I went to a school that didn't have that type of bullshit. I'm not saying there wasn't a "hierarchy", because there was, but it wasn't anything that I led to me being humiliated or embarrassed because I was lower on the totem pole, as it were. On the other hand, however, I just don't think this movie comes together as well as it could have, even though the pieces are there. I don't know if I feel comfortable in saying that the film was good, per se, but there are enough pieces here to where I could see how someone might say that it was. As far as the rating is concerned, this is where quarter ratings would really help. Cause this is a better than average movie, but it's not what I would call good. It's right in the middle of that and a rating of 2.75 stars would definitely help with that. I just don't know what the film was missing, honestly. The acting was quite strong, the writing was solid. I mean the narrative is effective in telling this story about this kid, who, really, all he wants is to be loved someone, anyone. Essentially, the film tells the story of Aritz friendship with Esteban and how Aritz' behavior starts to change, for the worse, when Sara joins their misfit crew. Of course, Sara and Esteban begin to have a sexual relationship at some point in the film, which only serves to Aritz feel more alienated. And this time it's by the people he would consider his closest friends. So he starts lashing out, becoming more and more emotionally unstable. Eventually, it comes to a point where, during a drug trip, Aritz threatens to slash Sara's throat with a piece from a broken bottle. Esteban and Sara, rightfully, start to push Aritz away due to this, even though Esteban still wants to help his friend get on the 'right path', as it were. Things keep escalating to a point where Aritz confesses to having murdered a prostitute and leaving behind Esteban's keychain behind. The thing is, with Aritz being the way he is, you do not know whether he's telling the truth or not and you didn't get to see this supposed murder. So things move along until the climax where, it is revealed, I think, that all Aritz wanted was someone to be there for him. Everyone he met has pushed him away somehow. Large parts of that were his own fault, of course. If I had a friend threaten to kill someone I deeply care about, then I would probably try to distance myself from them. I don't wanna say I've had a similar experience, cause it wouldn't even come close, but I once had someone, whom I was friends with as a result of his and my mom being friends, contact me some time ago, this is at least over 5 years ago, and I just didn't want anything to do with them. He didn't threaten my family or my girlfriend or anything like that, I just didn't wanna be friends with him, because he wasn't a very pleasant person to be around. So I can only imagine what it must be like in the case of someone who actually threatens his/her friend's loved ones. But I digress, in spite of all of that I mentioned, and the film is really quite sad in the end, I just felt that it never really came together to make a good movie. I just do not know what it was missing. As I mentioned earlier, all the pieces are there and yet it's just missing that extra ingredient that would've pushed it to the next level. This is a better than average movie, it's just not a good one. I can actually recommend this film even with that. I think far more people will like this than I did.
