06/22/2020 This is an empowering film about our public school system. Following the story of Principal Sullen, the film shows the importance of public school employees who sacrifice their time and money to invest in the next generation. It did a great job addressing the issues of poverty in a poor black comunity, and the release is in line with events happening today. I would definitely recommend this documentary! A principal in the low-income "Black Belt" of Alabama, Brelinda Sullen interacts with every student as if they are the focal point of her work (a work which might be more appropriately called a "ministry"), working to demonstrate love in every exchange, and in doing so she perfectly embodies her motto: "Love is what love does." In our society, we use it so often that sometimes it feels as if it's just another adjective in our society. True love, however, requires action. True love is the kind of love that Principal Sullen shows her students- and better yet, she doesn't just show them her love, she gives it selflessly to them. Principal Sullen is a principal to a community of students in Alabama that had lost their way and fallen into the world of sex, drugs and violence. Instead of retaliating with punishment and unkind worlds, Sullen provides the tough love and encouragement necessary for her students to grow into strong young men and women.
