Audience Reviews for Hua yue jia qi (Love in the Time of Twilight)
Personally, I call this film, Shanghai Blues (1984), and Beijing Opera Blues (1986) as "Tsui Hark's Nostalgia Trilogy." Three of them set in pre-wprld war II 1930s China and are filled with Hark's admiration to the mood of that age. "Love in the Time of Twilight" is the film Hark comes back to his origin after 10 years of big successful career as the director and producer of so many popular film series like "Once Upon a Time in China" series. Besides the prior two films, this one also has full of fantastic ideas and original sense of humour, and Hark suggests another concept of a time-traveling love-story. Hark features Charlie Yeung and Nicky Wu, who played a couple in "Butterfly Lovers" which he made right before this film. Their performances are not great, but fresh and pleasant to watch. Hark's direction to strengthen the sense of nostalgia by music and set decolation works well here again, although usual Hong Kong cheap SFXs deadens the elegant atmosphere. I can guess making this kind of film is such a tough work which requires you to plan real hard before shooting, so it's worth to respect in that point, even though some scenes look little bit too absurd. I love Tsui Hark making this kind of film the most among many other types of films he makes.
