Truthfully told musical saga of '20s singer Ruth Etting with fine turn by Doris Day; Cagney eats up scenery.

March 22, 2008

Doris was called on to act dramatically and not just sing and be the girl-next-door.

As a highly colored biopic, it's is an enjoyable mix of Day putting her stamp on Etting's best known songs and the contrasting acting styles of Day and Cagney.

Charles Vidor's crime-gangster musical, about the rise of fall of singer Ruth Etting, offers James Cagney (Oscar-nominated) and Doris Day some of the best dramatic roles of their careers.

Audience Reviews for Love Me Or Leave Me

Not bad, not bad. This film is certainly helped by Jimmy Cagney late in his career. I've never been a huge fan of Doris Day's acting abilities but she does okay here. Familiar soundtrack as well.

Overall alright. However, why on earth would Ruth help Marty in the end after all the negative things he did to her?

I would like to give this a higher rating, but the story itself is lacking. This is the first movie of Doris Day I've seen, and she is spectacular. It's not often that I am blow away, but when she sang her first song, I was in awe. What a woman! Unfortunately, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Too often the story stopped dead for her character's performances. There is no reason not to showcase her talents, but the performances did not advance the story nor develop the characters, and there were so many! The scenes with the actual story, though, were great. James Cagney put in a wonderful performance as a gangster holding on to a fading era. I just wish they had either cut back on the songs or worked them better into the story.
