This is socially conscious cinema at its most powerful and important. It might be tough to witness, but it's vital that we do.
It is powerful filmmaking, but I found questionable the packaging of sexual violence with the uplifting notes of mainstream entertainment.
A worthy but lifeless passion project.
At several points during Love Sonia, I found it hard to not question its real purpose: Is it really to highlight unimaginable trauma or fetishise it?
Tabrez Noorani's film is credible and forceful, with an excellent performance by Mrunal Thakur, but doesn't quite escape the deadening air of educational drama.
It's not an enjoyable watch but it's well made, authentic-feeling and very powerful thanks to fine performances from a cast led by Mrunal Thakur.
An excoriating, urgent look at the sordid world of global sex trafficking, anchored by a head-turning performance from newcomer Mrunal Thakur.
[Thakur] holds every scene, mostly in close-up. She carries the emotion. She gives the film a delicate yet defiant soul.
Love Sonia has moments of power before it blands out in a nulling denouement...
Newcomer Thakur is excellent in a tough role.
The script does not let up...it gives them enough time to create a world around Sonia.
Besides missing a punctuation mark in the title, Love Sonia is lacking in several other things. Plausible plot points, for one.
