Movie Info

Janette Oke's "Cherished Love" series continues with this tale of a small town physician who relies on her faith and her friends to get her through the hard times. Dr. Belinda Simpson (Sarah Jones) is still grieving the recent death of her husband when she accepts a new post as town physician in Sikeston. Upon arriving in Sikeston, Dr. Simpson finds that the children at the orphanage run by Miss Hattie Clarence (Cloris Leachman) have been stricken with a mysterious ailment. In Dr. Simpson's quest to ensure that no more children fall sick or die, she discovers that the townspeople blame the orphans for infecting the entire town, and would like to see the orphanage shut down completely. When the locals reject Dr. Simpson based primarily on the fact that she's a woman, she falls back on her faith, and her friendships with her best friend Annie (Haylie Duff) and town blacksmith Lee (Jordan Bridges) to win their trust.

While poorly acted, this film is shot very well by whomever. Looked at in widescreen mode on the tele (tv, for you neophytes), it is presentable as a first or least wise second rate film. Purely a sappy Hallmark Hall of Fame like movie, this film has a woman doctor and her friend doctor, also a woman graduate of Boston, coming to Sikeston, an unlikely hamlet near St. Louis, Missouri. A part of a series of films taken from the novel by Janette Oke, you should see all of the installments one by one, but unfortunately, the county library only has a few of the series going by the name: Love Comes Softly. The title of the series should be Love Comes Slowly,Very Slowly. Every one of these films has a bit of a fight between the lovers. This film is wonderful. It grabs your attention about half way thru as the woman doctor lead actress deals with a sickness the age has only bare witness to. Worth your time.

Super Reviewer

Extremely poor period detail, not very well acted with one exception - Cloris Leachman, who rises way above the rest of the film. It's a well meaning story, but the low budget hurts the film, and it is so routine.
