There's a strange absurdity to 'Madeline" that sometimes renders it a brilliant exercise and other times makes it feel rather pretentious.

An unremittingly pretentious film.

Note to filmmakers everywhere: If you want to depict emotional dissonance through relentlessly swirly cinematography, do it sparingly. If you do it for 90 minutes, as Decker does, the audience isn't stirred. It's queasy.

Madeline's Madeline flirts with entering the humanity-versus-bestiary debate... But it's less about that than the fetishization of mental illness, and no less than Evangeline, Madeline's Madeline blurs the line between observing it and exploiting it.

Madeline's Madeline lacks the self-reflection needed to answer its own questions about authorship-its story doesn't quite belong to its protagonist.

Letting the audience determine the meaning of her aesthetic choices, Decker shows little interest in creating meaning herself.

If you dissect what has happened, and take her POV away, it's a far less charming narrative than it seems.

"Madeline's Madeline" mistakes intimacy for honesty, and it mis-assumes that audiences care nearly as much about the creative process as actors and directors do.

The movie isn't a puzzle... That doesn't prevent [it] from being quite puzzling -- even to the point that it feels as if it's isolating itself from us.

Madeline's Madeline was not for me but I'm sure there's someone out there for it.

It can be seen as a cinematic experiment, but for most viewers one suspects it will be a failed one.

Filmmakers usually work for posterity, not just in the moment. And this Madeline is nothing for Proust to write home about.

... Madeline's Madeline is a full-on sensory assault that challenges the therapeutic nature of art through the chaos of an unstable mind.

The indie film lets the audience experience the effects of living with mental illness by creating an unstable atmosphere that accelerates like a ticking time bomb.

Madeline's Madeline is not a statement but a fiercely curious exploration of the dense relationships between artist and viewer, art and life, story and teller, and the different ways we perform ourselves every day.

Madeline's Madeline is a fascinating, often astonishing experimental work that obliterates the traditional structure of coming-of-age movies, but despite how abstract things may get, the emotion driving it remains crystal-clear.

Decker stretches the medium, creating a film that is at once uncomfortable and brilliant in its examination of intellectual and emotional appropriation.

Madeline's Madeline is a film built to comb through its details, to question what in its characters is identity and what is performance.

With an incredible finale evoking David Lynch and immersive theatre, the film leaves its questions unanswered but the audience entranced. Decker cements herself as a true original.

An enthused and compelling take on mental disorder fetishism and power roles, Madeline's Madeline is so full of wonderful ideas that its protagonist's headspace seems barren in comparison.
