Best line in the whole movie: "You're not wearing anything under that, are you?"

Ajankuluttama mutta ajoittain ihan pätevä.

A streetwise cop movie, a couple of years before the really good stuff of the genre started to come. Unfortunately Madigan is extremely lame take on the classic "he doesn't go by the book" -narrative. Astonishingly tedious acting by such great actors as Henry Fonda, Widmark, Harry Guardino. It's almost imbossible to imagine that Polonsky had his fingers on the script, since the plot is so incredibly weak - even though it goes all over the places (or maybe just because of that). Well, of course the directing by Siegel is even weaker than the story. Should be avoided at any costs.

Despite the very simple plot, Madigan is an entertaining detective Drama mostly because of Widmark and the maniacal overacting bad guy played by Steve Ihnat.

THE COMMISIONER was the basis for this Widmarkian crime thriller.

Delightfully bad. Always nice to see Michael "Miguelito Loveless" Dunn tho.

Great cast, middling script. Widmark is tough but hints at a vunerablity under that facade. Henry Fonda sort of walks through his role but it doesn't really ask much of him. Good period feeling which at the time may have been incidental but now gives you a sense of it's time. Inger looks amazing with some gravity defying hair but she's unfortuantely wasted in the wife role.

A hard boiled thriller of the old school (are less edgy thrillers "scrambled" to continue the eggs analogy?), this is also a great portrait of New York in the transition zone between the optimism of the post-war years and the dystopian cityscapes of the Seventies.

The acting is good throughout although that Bondesque habit of men in their fifites seducing and marrying much younger women is a tiresome feature of that age. The city looks sparse and dangerous with the subway somehow looking even less inviting than today.

Pretty lame. Very cliched, predictable and contrived.

Great cast, on paper, but they either end up over-acting or giving wooden performances.

Not as special as some reviews had led me to expect

Four cops (Widmark, Guardino, Whitmore and Fonda) spend a couple of days tracking down a psychopath who escaped from their custody with a police revolver in his posession. At the same time, the four also deal with issues such as corruption, police brutality, adultery, and civil rights. Exciting, though it seems a lot tamer in the era of Law & Order, The Wire, and NYPD Blue.

There's a tough, gritty movie hidden underneath the gloss and cliches here, though it's too bad it never truly gets to develop. It doesn't help that the atrocious score sounds as if it has been lifted from a live action Disney movie.

Terrific cop film with magical duo of Fonda & Widmark, a real forerunner to the violent NYC cop films of the 70s. Entire cast is good. Madigan would be brought back from the dead by NBC for a tv series in 1972.

The TV spinoff must not have been very good either, since tt only lasted six episodes. I think, subconsciously, Widmark must've rebelled at being on the right side of the law.

This sorta does the whole NYPD Blue thing twenty years before that show ever aired. The case is secondary to the melodrama of the the cops' lives. I'd really like to catch the TV show this turned into.

b4 Dirty Harry, there was Madigan. Tough and realistic police drama. Great Cast

Generic 60's maverick cop film that descends into melodrama for much of it's running time - far less interesting than it's pedigree (stars Henry Fonda and Richard Widmark, Director Don Siegel) would suggest. Disappointing!

an OK thriller but nothing to get too excited about.
