Audience Reviews for The Magic Blade (Tien ya ming yue dao)
At face value very banal, this movie plays out like a proverb in motion. It exchanges literalism for outlandish metaphor, which cements it in the eternal language of myth and legend. It gets a little repetitive in its constant over-the-top violence, but actually grows pleasantly dreamlike in the process.
Not much to complain about with Ti Lung fighting in what is essentially a high fantasy movie with some over the top set designs and costumes. The fight choreography is certainly notable, and there is a ton of combat packed into this movie, for those of you who only come to watch that element of the film.
A good ol "you think your kung fu is better than my kung fu?" wuxia extravaganza, with fights almost every five minutes. Ti Lung goes around with a poncho and a kickass spinning blade, there are fights involving chinese human chess formations, and piles of enemies forming chinese characters. Don't even try to follow the plot or you'll get a headache, enjoy the wuxia madness, plain and simple.
