Two hours of tedium followed by an additional 30 minutes of preaching.

Built on a weak script that exploits nostalgia in an attempt to make you overlook an absurd plot...

With its fake burnished sunsets and wobbly high school band playing the national anthem, The Majestic wavers uncomfortably between blissfully old-fashioned and just plain maudlin.

Smug, simpering and warmed over, The Majestic is a horrible film with delusions of grandeur.

It manages to go from cornball Capra wanna-be to overbaked courtroom grandstand without missing a beat, to say nothing of the ever-present 'insert emotion here' musical score.

A celluloid fantasy that breathes no life it doesn't borrow from other movies.

So obviously modeled on Capra's films that it begs to be measured against them, and it's not as good.

It can't fake sincerity. It tries ever so hard, but it doesn't have a single believable second.

It espouses simplistic solutions, phony platitudes, and dripping schmaltz in the place of genuine humanity, making a lie out of all the emotions it wants so badly to champion.

Mr. Carrey may go to both Washington and a version of Bedford Falls in The Majestic, but he is neither the Jefferson Smith nor George Bailey of Stewart's best-loved films.
December 20, 2001
A pale imitation [of Capra's films] that challenges credulity and tries too hard to win our hearts with schmaltz.

I think audiences will respond to what seems like the film's 'open heart,' but there's a naggingly insincere and overtly manipulative quality here that leaves an unpleasant aftertaste.
December 16, 2001
Director Frank Darabont ... tries to recapture the sentimental, patriotic films of Frank Capra proving once and for all that you can't go home again.

Sadly, because credibility takes a back seat to sentimentality, "The Majestic" comes up quite shy of its title.
