Adam H @Adm-supermarket 08/10/2020 Striking and sad like a hot day in the desert with no reprieve. It's visceral -- people suffering in the desert, in August, in southern Iraq. It's also a sobering reflection on the bonds of solidarity forged during moments of political struggle, and how, after a monumental loss, unscrupulous behavior reigns and solidarity frays, in all kinds of directions. The pacing of the movie reflects the content. Like a long ride in the heat, you can't wait for it to be over; I found that that discomfort drew me into the characters. It works as a character study; the plot is confused, with flashbacks and vague landmarks that perhaps reflect the characters' delirium. The gender / sexuality politics of the film today perhaps show some of the limits of this type of nationalism in this era. The character of the driver is symbolically over-done; his hysterical laughter is also a bit much. The women characters in the film have very little to do except say "aiwa." See more Read all reviews
