Not terribly scary, but interesting enough to keep the audience engaged. The characters are well rounded, the effects are simple and effective, and the supernatural elements are not forced down the audience's throats. 3 1/2 stars

Malefique is a decent French supernatural horror film. Four prisoners sharing one cell discovered a book which could be the only hope of their escape, but the book contains more trouble than it seemed. It's a little bit slow but you get to know all of the characters and the special effects were magnificent too. Overall a nice little gem to understand the darkest secrets of people.

Provides an ambience of claustrophobia in its bug-infested location, never making you certain which bizarre direction this will take next.

A great little French drama/horror movie set in a prison. 4 prisoners find an old diary which has been wedged inside the wall of their cell. It contains some strange drawings and the text is in a couple of different languages. They find out that it belonged to a prisoner in the 1920's who used dark magic spells to escape from his cell. They decide to try and recite the spells inside the journal for their own means of escape.

A very intriguing atmospheric movie. I'd read that this was a horror movie but it's more of a mystery one dealing with the occult more than anything else. There is a little bit of gore but not a lot. Despite the fact that the whole movie takes place inside a claustrophobic cell you never get bored watching it. The characters are all interesting and you root behind them in their quest to escape. I love the brilliant twist at the end, very unexpected. Malefique is an effective chiller despite the slow start. Stick with it and you'll find that it does deliver.

Loved the setting and the beautifully twisted ending...like a story from Amicus or Tales from the Crypt anthologies.

One of the best French horror films. Very entertaining and bizzare concepts through out. Horror fans get onto it.

Pros: interesting characters, unique plot
Cons: Poor effects, some logic errors

Four of the most bonkers inmates you ever did see are together in one cell looking to a book they've found from a previous inmate to get them out of their jail. It's ok nothing more. It kinda plods along never really teasing your interest to anything above average. Quite how a dead man whose limbs have been twisted and snapped could be thought to have tripped and fallen stretches things a bit but Im prepared to figure. Why? Cos that little cutie from Poltergay is on screen and he's always easy on the eye - even with a wig and boobs as he is here...and no Im not joking.

Don't let the old school horror style throw you off. Malefique is, albeit slow, an absorbing movie, and gets most of the elements right: Intrigue, suspense and thrills.
