Beautiful work of Art a dreamlike voyage beyond time and space--Mesmerizing and Unique!!
Harry Kumel's fantasy is certainly one of the strangest movies ever made, an entertaining oddity that must be seen to be believed.
Oo).
One of the weirdest and best haunted house movies out there. Think Hammer Horror as realized by Wojciech Has. It also has Orson Welles in it.
A sailor is taken to Malpertuis, a strange estate ruled by a sickly Cassavius (Orson Welles) from his bed; when Cassavius dies, the odd provisions of his will prod the bizarre residents into conflict. A collection of sometimes brilliant scenes that appears to be building to some kind of mystical revelation, but always pulls back just when things start to get interesting, and ends with a frustrating "dream inside a dream" climax. It was a flop that cut Harry Kumel's promising directorial career short; he claims that the problem was editorial butchering by United Artists, but the 120 minute director's cut is unsatisfying on its own.
C'est comme le livre : intriguant, mysterieux et pesant. Mais c'est aussi assez moche et tres mal joue. L'oeuvre de Jean Ray de meritait pas ca...
Fantastic cinema at it's best. Really pushes the conventional limitations of it's time of production and budget, effectively condensing a difficult narrative. Fans should check out Série rose La serre, and Blue Underground's excellent edition of Daughters of Darkness.
Quite a find, this. Orson in a surreal Belgium take on Ancient Greek fables. Dark and atmospheric, but not much joy to be had here, though. Off beat and shades of Bunel in places, if a little lite on substance
Me gustó mucho. Surrealista, setentera, muy buena.
This movie was quite a dissapointing adaption of Jean Ray's novel. It had too much of a comic and absurdist feel to it which diminished the anxiety of the original story. Also, they could of done a better job of aging Orson Wells than by simply rubbing dirt on his face!
