If you're looking for laughs, X doesn't mark the spot.

If the context of Marci X were more realistic, a lot of these gags would soar. But the context is drag-show dinner theater.

A brief bit about a celibate boy band scores big; the rest is just noise.

Given the songs were written by South Park songwriter Marc Shaiman, the lyrics should be more caustic. Like that show, the film is equally irreverent but nowhere near as intelligent or subversive.

The title must have been transcribed wrong. This film should be called Marci. . . Yech!

August 27, 2003
A mess of would-be satire and condescending humor that never works for a second. Every person involved with this disaster should be ashamed.
August 27, 2003
A movie apparently determined to set back the progress of blacks in American culture by several decades.
August 27, 2003
A talent-stuffed assemblage of barbs and giddy musical numbers that shouldn't be written off as a feature flop -- but savored instead for the cult-ready collection of late-night satirical skits and misses it is.

It's made by people who apparently don't know a damned thing about rap or hip-hop and have made lame sitcom with 30 minutes of story stretched out to 90 minutes of movie.

There are some funny moments, but it's quite obvious that no one associated with this movie knows anything about rap music.

August 26, 2003
...a tremendously clumsy and disastrous dud for the ages...a staggeringly inept romp that plays like stale fodder in a nostalgic Luther Campbell/2Live Crew home movie.

Sports woefully outmoded cultural punchlines.
August 25, 2003
The term 'wildly uneven' doesn't come close to charting the peaks and valleys of Marci X.
August 25, 2003
Lame and painfully dated.

The spoofs in Marci X are so old and dated, it boggles the imagination to think of what group might still be offended them.

Who thought it would be a good idea to turn Lisa Kudrow into a Vanilla Ice for this millennium? The Friends star barrels through two wan rap numbers in the misbegotten Marci X, a much-delayed turkey that has finally come home to roost.

Marci X plays like a satire made by people who don't know the worlds they're satirizing.

If this had been released in, say, 1994 at the latest, it might have been cutting-edge. As it is, it's just so much sticky foam on the cappuccino.

This is the kind of movie that would leave a hopeful crowd feeling let down, but might sparkle like a tiara in a trash can for someone who discovers it by chance.
August 25, 2003
This is the kind of comedy in which the characters are construction-paper cutouts whose abrupt changes of heart are dictated entirely by the preposterous plot and not by psychological or social reality.
