Not for the faint of heart.

Started OK with some doubts about why the friend would be so supportive but was just an excuse to show brutal and disgusting torture of a girl with no real substance or reason why.

An underground society believes that if you inflict enough pain and suffering on a young female woman she will experience true ecstasy and travel to the other side; if it exists. Repellent and oddly engrossing largely due to the superb acting.

Depressing and horrifying, as it ought to be. You will either feel like a part of you has died or a new part has been born after watching it.

Great first half. Second half is crap, crap, mega crap.

Interesting movie with a creative idea. It felt a little boring and confusing at the start, but later took a sharp turn and kept me interested. Most of the movie was torture, so if you like torture movies you will love this. The end was horrifying, and you can have your own take on it's meaning. Other than a few holes in logic, there aren't many flaws I can think of.

one of the scariest movies you will ever see!

You're basically curious to see what the fuck's going on in this eerie little film, but curiosity killed the cat... way too sick, and with no apparent reason.

Another example of balls out Euro horror that is at times brilliant but frustratingly contrived and ultimately ludicrous ( a bit like that other French release, Haute Tension). It‚??s a shame as director Pascal Laugier is a talented director and he certainly knows how to create a sense of creeping dread and draw out some brave performances from his actors. It‚??s his half baked script however, that lets this film down. It tried so desperately to be Hostel with a brain but it still ended up at destination ‚??torture porn flick‚?? with a few stops on the way to rip shreds of the rotting carcass off Flatliners and Funny Games.

Unnervingly gory, Martyrs may hamper some of it's true potential on scenes of torture & pain, yet it's strong performances and thrilling plot successfully divert it's viewers.

best horror movie ever made.

He was strong, well made, stressful, this kind of movies do capture the attention of espectaor at all times, history was well documented, but the end was a little abstract for the kind of movie it is.

Fantastic movie - it deals with several different issues with well developed characters, a great storyline, great acting, and a really intense atmosphere... I will agree that the level of violence in the movie means it won't be to everyone's taste, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as effective in telling it's story without it.

In your face brutal but hey, it's the French doing extreme horror. Good acting, astonishing design and a compelling Sci/fi like story, save it form being just another excuse for exploding blood bags.

Pascal Laugier's French Extreme entry is about as sadistic and grim as horror films ever get. This film is perverse and the level of violent abuse and torture go much further than is needed. The aspect of this film that makes it so incredibly interesting and cinematically valid is that it so shockingly surprising. The entire film hinges on the extremities of human cruelty and the unrelenting intensity that the filmmaker and his exceptional cast creates. This is a grim and unforgettable experimental horror film which is far smarter than you think. And, it demands a response. I would never actually recommend this film to anyone, but I'm unable to give it a low rating because it is truly horrifying and utterly captivating. This is not a movie for sensitive viewers and the NC-17 rating should be followed.

A terrible mess of a movie that constantly doesn't know what idea or theme it wants to focus on. This movie is the definition of torture porn. It has a couple of shocking scenes with a terrible story to support it. It starts off as a psychological movie into a really awful "cult" movie. Also when I said "cult" I meant rich old white people. LIKE EVERY OTHER CULT IN EVERY MOVIE EVER! A train wreck in terms of plot structure that tries to bite off more than it can chew. I will give the film the 15 minutes it spent being stuck down in the dungeon those were actually really well done scenes as you felt helpless with the girl, but it's at the end of the movie. You have to wait 1 hour and 15 minutes to see a horrible twist to get to it. The movie starts off as a revenge movie into a "deep" and "philosophical" mess of a film.

Absolutely disturbing. Typically a horror film would give you unlikable characters that would cause you to enjoy to see them get tortured. Not the case here the character is very likable, and you feel like you are suffering with her, that it is painful. The last 30 minutes is what this film is all about and I found the conclusion fascinating and haunting. This will leave you feeling depressed and disturbed.

Gruesome story about a girl who was imprisoned, tortured, and abused as a child then escapes and is found wandering the roads. She befriends another girl at the orphanage she ends up in and 15 years later seeks violent revenge on the people she claims did it to her.

Totally worth watching if you like French Extremism horror or movies like Frontier(s) or Inside. Very gory and graphic and has a great plot line and unrelenting cringe moments. Someone literally gets skinned alive and you get to see them after muscles and all. It's rather beautiful considering.

The beginning of the movie set such a high standard, I don't know if I'd seen a better first 30 minutes of a horror movie, but after that it fails miserably, getting caught in its own plot holes which only sink the movie to its demise. It's a bad movie, and if you want to consider this a good movie don't watch the entire thing, leave it to the imagination much like the essential question which the movie asks us.
