McGlynn's quiet approach may be admirable, but it falls awkwardly between two stools, proving itself neither dramatic enough nor fun enough to raise up the drunken Mary.
With her soulful brown eyes and subtle expressions, Cash perfectly conveys the sense of a woman putting on a brash front who cannot quite disguise the melancholy inside.
"Mary Goes Around" handles its story beats with a canny mixture of rueful humor, warmth and realism.
Mary Goes Round is an unself-conscious, sweet, and sometimes sour look at one woman trying to get back into the driver's seat of her own life.
An absolute gem of a movie that hits the sweet spot between awkward and affecting without ever feeling contrived.
Mary Goes Round justifies its existence and excels through the good, old-fashioned virtues of writing, directing and acting.
...the above-average atmosphere [is] certainly heightened by Cash's completely convincing turn as the self-destructive protagonist.
Writer/director McGlynn's first featureh takes a slightly familiar premise and invests it with spiky energy, richly drawn characters and a streak of caustic humour.
