Navel-gazing and listless, Mary Magdalene is nevertheless an affecting, contemplative hagiography of a biblical figure which is more inclined towards an arthouse aesthetic than anything in the "faith-based" sub-genre.

Mary Magdalene here is a woman who fights for what she believes, who moves away from her family to follow Jesus... [Full review in Spanish]

A film of little dialogue, almost entirely made of mood. But the mood is pretty magical ... truly depicts how scary it would be to see someone brought back from the dead ... title is a cheat; this is the story of Christ, even if he has less close-ups.

The story is familiar but the take thought-provoking and quietly revolutionary in its depiction of the manipulation of records.

Phoenix's Jesus is softly, tactilely loving. Davis brings you close enough to almost feel the weave of his clothes.

Mary Magdalene is an overdue retelling of the story, one that restores Mary of Magdala to her acknowledged place and more.

It's admirable that a young director in the wake of Oscars success has chosen such a risky follow up, and though the result isn't completely satisfying, the attempt is worthwhile.

Without scaring any horses, Davis ... gets the familiar tale across with lucidity and some grace

Throw in a poignant, elegant score (sadly one of his last) by Johann Johannsson (Arrival) and Icelandic cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir and the result is an understated and elegiac drama.

Rooney Mara is an effective Mary Magdalene, although Tahar Rachim gives us a model Judas. [Full Review in Spanish]

Takes to telling the story of its disputed subject with engaging performances and a quietly assured confidence sure to rile those of traditional faith-based views.

I liked the matter-of-fact way [Garth] Davis tells this extremely familiar story: we're given a real sense of what his followers sacrificed and risked, a woman most particularly.

The role of Judas Iscariot is turned on its head by a superb performance by Tahar Rahim, as playful and affectionate as a puppy that doesn't know the sharpness of its own teeth.

It goes straight for the forehead: it is a brow-furrower and a temple-rubber, best mulled over at a remove.

There's no doubt that Davis has taken some major risks with Mary Magdalene and while they don't all pay off in completely satisfactory ways there are still enough qualities to make this intriguing piece of revisionism constantly watchable.

It's a moving image, one that deserves much more space. [Full Review in Spanish]

A fiercely feminist and proudly revisionist historical drama that offers a powerful and much-needed rebuke to modern Christianity. Enrapturingly beautiful and intensely emotional.

With the story told more through the eyes than the dialogue; barren-yet-beautiful locations and the late Jóhann Jóhannsson's score, there's a dreaminess here that's all too rare an experience in modern cinema.

Garth Davis proves once again his skills behind the camera can help uplift middlebrow material - but only to a certain extent.
