Doesn't have the teeth to properly wrestle with its theological themes nor the bite to give the titular figure's perspective any real clarity.

For a film that is meant to be all about belief, Mary Magdalene is curiously lacking in the stuff.

Davis (best known for 2016's Lion) has pulled off the miracle of turning The Greatest Story Ever Told into One of the Dullest Stories Ever Screened.

It's just that - well, it's a bit thin.

Although a rather elegant and serene interpretation of an eternal story, this film has little new or interesting to offer either to believers or non-believers.

The film is so slow at times it becomes monotonous. [Full Review in Spanish]

Rooney Mara is a remarkable actress, suggestive, sober, but her presence does not alleviate in the midst of so much boredom. [Full Review in Spanish]

It turns out to be a failed exercise...redundant, slow and schematic. [Full Review in Spanish]

A tasteful RE lesson that rushes to paint Mary's inner strength and moral goodness, but forgets to shade in the contours of her characterisation.

The problem with the film's "humanist" approach is that it's too... human-scaled. The result is a film made without magic or sublimity, in which reverence is replaced by diligence.

Everyone looks way too clean, they endlessly pontificate in a variety of accents and it's awfully hard nowadays to take any biblical movie seriously since Monty Python's Life Of Brian.

Hushed, deliberate and realised with considerable care and beauty, the resulting film has its heart entirely in the right place; its pulse, unfortunately, is far harder to locate.
April 9, 2018
An intermittently convincing film about belief, rather than a film to believe in.

Mary Magdalene tries to retell the Easter story, and lays an egg.

I'll freely admit that I'm not a religious person and perhaps this influences my opinion... but I didn't find Mary Magdalene to be an interesting character.

It ripples with interesting ideas, but the overall effect is glassy and inert, with Rooney Mara's Mary an oddly elusive presence in the film that carries her name.

[A] clearly well-intentioned, attractive, wistful-to-the-point-of-inertia film ...
