From the moment Saoirse Ronan's Mary Stuart washes ashore, us and everyone on that craggy balmy Scottish beach innately know her as royalty.

Obviously, this is a simplified and likely exaggerated representation of history, but the difficulties these women faced should not be dismissed or underestimated.

...trying to update a medieval story for modern times doesn't quite work. But at least Mary Queen of Scots is watchable.

As a pair of character studies it is a fascinating contrast, with both Ronan and Robbie giving performances worthy of the dignity of their characters.

There was a distancing effect that kept me from being able to connect with either woman as strongly as I wanted to.

More wigs, make up, costumes and "Mean Girls" posturing than history, but strong leads.

Despite a lackluster payoff, Mary Queen of Scots is worth watching for the performances of Ronan and Robbie alone.

Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie command the screen in this delicious anti costume drama with an earthy ethos, replete with movie-movie internecine spycraft and a sly, smart feminist parable that resonates for us today.

Whatever side you land on, it's unavoidable to think of how much different history would have been if these women were friends instead of foes.

Willimon's screenplay is generous to both women, succeeding in allowing us to comprehend the motives and thinking of them both.

Rourke's take on the Mary-Elizabeth confrontation is unlikely to be the final cinematic word on the subject, but among existing films about the doomed queen of Scots, it's the finest yet.

The filmmakers have come up with a nifty, billowing fabric sequence to keep them apart while together, and that's enough to satisfy my urge to fact check, at least when the performances are as much fun as they are in "Mary Queen of Scots."

Instead, we get a talkative "Masterpiece Theater"-like production that takes a ... feminist slant to illustrate the difficulties women monarchs had to endure in the 16th century - and to ham-fistedly exclaim what we already know - ... it's a man's world.

Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan take on iconic roles and fiercely bring the #MeToo movement to the 16th century. Well, sort of.

The most spirited heart and poignant soul of "Mary Queen of Scots" are Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as Mary and Elizabeth, whose contradictory relationship accommodates hostility, jealousy, admiration and sisterly love with affecting seamlessness.

This is a moderately but consistently entertaining film, with but one extraordinary thing about it, which is Saoirse Ronan in the title role.

Its sprawling storytelling about women in authoritative positions gives the picture its own sense of 16th-century political wokeness, which is notable in any era.

This looks like some dry PBS period piece, but they talk some s---- in this movie.
