A historical melodrama that lacks emotion, despite the fantastic performances of both lead actresses. [Full Review in Spanish]

This is a film with some good intentions that failed to deliver. While the story of both of these monarchs has never failed to intrigue the masses,Mary Queen of Scots strips the titular characters of their nuances, much to the detriment of the film.

Mary Queen of Scots will pull you into the muck if you so choose.

The film doesn't exactly do anything heinously wrong in its treatment of its Brit queens rivalry, but it finds no real means to elevate its story beyond the perfunctory.

The film serves more like a powerful vehicle to show off Ronan's dramatic talent and Robbie's new-found range than to enlighten anyone about what actually happened to Mary and her relationship with Elizabeth.

There's nothing really tying any of the political turmoil together besides the history itself, presenting sequences strung together without any hint of a story.

Ronan is excellent and the costumes are lovely, but that's just not enough. You find yourself wanting a whole lot more.

The story is disjointed, but from what I gathered, the life of a Queen, just plain sucks... except maybe for the wig selection.

The pieces are there, but they don't quite fit together.

Because of how heavy they were laying on the agenda, it made me stop to question, alright, how much of this is accurate.

If God can save the Queen, perhaps he can help out Mary Queen of Scots, too

It's more disappointing than bad. A great cast and an interesting period of history wasted on a sombre muddle that wants to have both the gravity of Shakespeare and a fresh, dynamic perspective.

Despite an engaging performance from Saoirse Ronan ... first-time director Josie Rourke cannot overcome the dramatic inertia of the increasingly lifeless script.

Mary Queen of the Scots has a timely premise with a lot to say about toxic masculinity and women empowerment but never gets around to it, despite its brief sparks of brilliance that quickly die out before catching fire.

The paint-by-numbers contemporary empowerment veers at times into distraction, when facts slip away in favour of feeling.

Beau Willimon's stiflingly expository screenplay... moonlights as the undergraduate lecture David Starkey would give after a partial lobotomy.

In Mary Queen of Scots, we don't see a reckoning with the future of a country united across the Scottish-English border. We see queens cry and fret about their hair.

The Scottish and English scenery is gorgeous, but one still wonders why bother with action scenes that beget no action.

Behind the mesmerizing performance of one of the best leading women of her generation, Saoirse Ronan, and a spellbinding performance by Margot Robbie, this film is let down by a lacklustre script.

But I wish the cast, costume director, and hair and makeup team had a better story to work with.
