DanTheMan 2 May 11 Pilot episodes like Brother's Keeper are a dime a dozen, rarely will you find a debut that so perfectly introduces nearly every element that would go on to define one of the best television shows around, although with the very notable exception of Edward James Olmos' Marty. A timeless and brilliant reflection of its 80s New Wave era, featuring fashion and music in keeping with the music video stylings popular at the time; capturing the fatalistic attitude of a generation still living under the threat of nuclear war and the moralistic titillation that condemns casual sex and drug use by spending an inordinate amount of time dwelling on them. The pastel colours and synthpop music fit perfectly with the vibe of a Miami Beach that was in the early stages of revitalisation; director Thomas Carter absolutely delivers when it comes to the visual stylisations with the godfather of Vice, Michael Mann's influence being all over the tone, look and sound. Don Johnson's performance as Crockett is flawless, and every scene with him is exceptional while Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs is no slouch either, the perfect sidekick to Crockett's antics, the two often acting as each other's rocks. The developing bond between the duo is a key factor to what makes the series so memorable, they balance off each other perfectly, showcasing the endless struggle against a culture of tireless evil all backed by the utterly rockin' musical arrangements of Jan Hammer. Just as dramatic, gripping, witty and sexy today as when it first launched, Ultimately, Miami Vice is about individuals who live courageously and carry the weight of a nation’s sins on their shoulders and if you weren't already convinced that this isn't one of the all-time television greats, all you need to do is watch till Phil Collins kicks in to truly understand. We're all players here, getting high on the action.
