Age of Uprising: The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas (2014)

Critic Consensus: Age of the Uprising is well-acted and skillfully composed; unfortunately, it crawls along too slowly to take advantage of its finer qualities.

Movie Info

An epic drama set in 16th century France against a backdrop of feudalism in decline, AGE OF UPRISING: THE LEGEND MICHAEL KOHLHAAS stars Mads Mikkelsen (A ROYAL AFFAIR, VALHALLA RISING, Hannibal) as a well-to-do horse merchant who resorts to fanatical and violent extremes to obtain justice after a nobleman openly and illegally humiliates him by stealing two of his horses. Adapted from Heinrich von Kleist's novella, a classic of German Romanticism, MICHAEL KOHLHAAS was previously adapted for film in 1969 by Volker Schlöndorff and served as the inspiration for E.L. Doctorow's Ragtime. (c) Music Box Films

Critic Reviews for Age of Uprising: The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas

The film is almost monotonously somber, though not in a bad way -- when it erupts into violence or settles briefly into moments of intimacy, the shift in tone can be surprising, even invigorating.

It can be quite powerful on the rare occasions when it allows raw emotion to make its way to the surface.

The severely beautiful film is painted in a dauntingly austere manner, as if lost in a war against itself, with confrontations underplayed and the rural landscapes making more of an impression than the detoured drama.

It's a strong story of lonely, even futile righteousness, which makes the plodding execution by director Arnaud des Pallierès somewhat mystifying.

This muted approach robs the film of sorely needed momentum, but offers a rare opportunity for contemplation, a trade-off that only occasionally satisfies.

Succeeds neither as a decent adaptation of the book nor as a rewarding movie in its own right ... Dullness prevails.

Audience Reviews for Age of Uprising: The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas

just was not able to get in to the story and for this movie it did not help that it was in subtitles. for me it was to slow and wanted to fall a sleep

Sparse. Dry. Boring. Charmless. A poor man's version of Barry Lyndon. The hero fights and retires for justice, or order. The landscapes are sometimes beautifully shot and the horse birth is grotesque and pretty at the same time. At least a quarter, maybe even half of the film is shot in shadows. It's annoying and difficult to see. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

A tale of law and honor in a credibly gritty looking historical drama - which completely fails to hold my attention despite being composed of themes, performers, and historical details that seem perfectly suited to captivating me.
