You can tell Hill could craft an entertaining film in a mode he's comfortable with, but aiming for profundity finds his reach exceeding his grasp.

Mid90s loses steam as it moves along, weighed down by the burden of excessive subplots that it never cares to explore beyond a few isolated moments.

While the film's mise-en-scene is a joy and succeeds at establishing fully fleshed out characters, it doesn't know what to do with them.

Mid90s feels like an exercise in nostalgia and nothing more.

There should have been more put to the end of the film...there was a lot left on the table that we didn't get to see. You'll definitely enjoy the soundtrack, though.

There's a level above pure documentation, above assembling the relics of a different era and cataloging them across the space of a screen, and Hill never reaches it.

In fact, the film is in celebration of a toxic masculinity that the contemporary #MeToo movement is currently taking a stand against.

Mid90s won't be for everyone.

A hangout movie can be fun and insightful, but "Mid90s" feels like a Richard Linklater cover song without any of the wit or soul.

Mid90s uses a super-uncomfortable sex scene to make its young protagonist cool, because of course it does.

All of this is a fine bromance of little substance or depth-there's something to be explored about choosing your own family, but having one character list the rest of the characters' problems is not the same anyone having nuance.

This is more Hill's world than it's ours, even if he does a magnificent job trying to offer us a way in. He just doesn't give us much of a reason to remember it as fondly as he does.

More like Meh-d90s.

Mid90s is one of the slightest major releases in recent memory, and although a handful of nice moments point to Hill's potential, none of the characters are developed beyond a one-sentence outline.

Hill's directorial debut is aggressively mediocre, especially coming in the wake the heart-wrenchingly authentic Eighth Grade and the riveting Skate Kitchen...

The nihilistic rebelliousness of the film's teens is obviously indebted to Kids, but Jonah Hill cannot commit to Larry Clark's brand of defiant bleakness.

Hill may well turn out to have a growing talent for directing. But he needs to match his subtler insights to a script that feels less derivative.

For as much as it looks the part, Mid90s never feels real - because its characters just don't seem to feel much of anything at all.

Hill's natural instinct is to go for the laugh, and I wish he skewed more toward comedy than drama here. It would have made for a better film. (Full Content Review for Parents - Violence, Profanity, Sexual Content, etc. - also Available)

A slice of life, a bit of uncomfortable truth, actor turned director Jonah Hill builds a convincing world, but doesn't really know how to make it matter.
