The music-oriented drama Mighty Oak takes some heavy issues, such as drug addiction and mental illness, and throws them into an overly saccharine story that's supposed to be uplifting but ends up being pandering and grossly unrealistic.

This one just always seems to be a little off kilter. Obviously aimed at families, but having some weird elements that don't fit in to that style.

The movie seems like it is going to be a standard family movie and even has a fun if cliched premise. Tommy Ragen is fantastic, in an otherwise uneven film that is more odd than anything else.

This premise would excel far better, and go much deeper with its targeted themes, in something like a dark comedy; that Mighty Oak embraces this delusion with no sarcasm and a lot of wish fulfillment is at the very least worrisome.
