Miss Bala provides the first feasible argument for our southern neighbor to pay for building a wall: to keep Hollywood hacks out of the country.

The rare remake that makes you wish the original had never existed.

Now, I don't like the cartel sub-genre that has been forming...That being said, I give credit where credit is due...Unfortunately, there isn't much credit due here.

A tough, female-led thriller from the director of Twilight sounds great on paper; unfortunately, the lack of nous in Miss Bala's politics runs the film smack into a big brick wall.

The most memorable part of Miss Bala is when "Los Ageless" by St. Vincent plays during a party scene. That rules. The rest of the film, sadly, does not.

This Hollywoodized remake is mostly generic and uninspired, but it also proves that Rodriguez has the makings of a true movie star.

Aside from a few stylistic choices and an engaging performance from Rodriguez, Miss Bala is a paint-by-numbers crime drama that lacks any real poignancy or cutting commentary.

An action movie without suspense, a message without meaning; Catherine Hardwicke presents a contrived Hollywood adaptation you can probably live without.
February 17, 2019
Yet another story of an American with no experience as a criminal going down to Mexico, battling toe-to-toe with dangerous, murderous drug dealers, and coming out on top.

It's hard to say if Hardwicke's unwillingness to ugly things up is a feature or a bug.

Rodriguez may well be an action star yet, but this is not the vehicle to get her there.

With Hardwicke behind the camera and Rodriguez in front of it, Miss Bala is a woman's journey from innocent yet brave bystander to kick-ass heroine who doesn't take any shit from anyone.

It's not deep and its lurid story may not stand up to logic, but if all you ask is that it's got action and someone to root for, it delivers.

I would be willing to toss Miss Bala into my ever-growing pile of disappointments if it weren't such an aggressive waste of Gina Rodriguez's talent. She's capable of so much more that this and we all deserve better from her.

Miss Bala offers a self-flattering vision of American strength, as one focused gun-toting gal strikes a blow for her gender while cleaning up a skirmish in the ongoing war on drugs.
February 6, 2019
It's evident that the new Miss Bala is an anglicized story, a mainstream narcoland action movie with an artificially empowered female lead as its selling point.
February 6, 2019
in the process of making Miss Bala into a more upbeat, empowering survival tale, Hardwicke has lost almost all of what made the original riveting.

There is a clear difference between something that is complex and something that is just complicated, and the story in this Miss Bala is an over-complicated mess.
