Loose, slightly strange gambling film that effectively conveys addiction and the misery that permeates from it. Great performances from the leads.

Atmospheric, dialogue rich, and authentically heartfelt-Mississippi Grind proves to be a hidden gem in the road film and gambling genre, offering interesting character insights, terrific performances and a nuanced approach to storytelling that doesn't spoonfeed the audience, rather unfolds as the characters are so apt to do themselves. It's low-key ending may be off-putting to some, but in the end its themes become accentuated in a way true of its main characters, played beautifully by Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn-in what undoubtedly will prove to be his best performance yet.

Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn lead the cast in the indie character drama Mississippi Grind. The story follows two compulsive gamblers named Gerry and Curtis who team up for a road trip through Mississippi, hitting various casinos and racetracks. Reynolds and Mendelsohn have good chemistry together and give strong performances. However, the plot is rather thin and doesn't really flesh out the characters. Yet the film is quite engaging when Gerry and Curtis are caught up in gambling fever; winning, losing, risking everything, and looking for signs. It's a bit uneven and has some storytelling issues, but overall Mississippi Grind is a pretty entertaining ride.
