Movie Info

Les Mistons (aka The Mischief Makers) was the second short-subject film directed by Francois Truffault. Exploring subject matter that he'd later expand upon in his work (though less conventionally), Truffault takes us into the world of pre-teen boys. The protagonists are a group of scruffy Parisians on summer holiday. They play, discourse, wreak havoc on their elders, and experience a variety of sexual awakenings. It is hard to find Les Mistons on a videocassette all by itself; usually it is bracketed with one of Truffault's later features, most often the thematically similar 400 Blows. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Audience Reviews for Les Mistons (The Brats) (The Kids)

Worth tracking down if you're a Truffaut fan. I find it interesting that Truffaut said he found the children playing the part of the brats to be acting against their own instincts. He said they were completely uninterested in the girl or the guy who were kissing, etc. He was then inspired to make a film involving kids with a more true-to-life plot and more accurate motivations. That film would be the 400 Blows, basically.

Great actors, great writing, great story, great filming, great score • A great love story and funny as well. The kids were wonderful as well as the lovers. The story was great for a short film. The concept was good and the whole film was enjoyable.

A fine early short from Truffaut, kind of a preamble to The 400 Blows. It has a breezy feel to it, with a handful of playful editing tricks and some pleasant camera movement on the bicycle scenes.
