Green's directing clearly wants me to breathe their air and live their lives. But his writing keeps everything frustratingly distant.

The ideas the film explores are worthy, but the execution is disappointing. Monsters and Men feels unfinished... The film contains the start of an important conversation, but the credits roll on an incomplete thought.

The stories, for the most part, don't resolve themselves, or they tend to tie up abruptly in a fashion that frustrates expectations without providing compensating insight.

Reinaldo Marcus Green writes and directs the unraveling stories, never bringing any of the subplots to a fitting conclusion. Cinematographer Patrick Scola's camerawork is the film's greatest asset.

Despite its ambitions, "Monsters and Men" makes its weighty subject matter feels thin and slight.

Monsters And Men is well made but rather dull, and all the characters feel like adjuncts of an argument rather than actual people.

Like many films tackling socially inflammatory material, Monsters and Men is constrained by its politics.

Wayward and unsettled in style and story, as if to reflect the restlessness of cul-de-sac lives, it never catches at its characters for long enough to make their unsettled waywardness compelling.

For the people Green most hopes to engage, he hasn't given them quite enough to work with.

Monsters and Men almost feels more like a tone poem than a narrative. It's sincere and feels lived in, but it seems a bit too ephemeral in its treatment of the matters that it wants us to consider to have much impact.

Blindspotting will not resonate with everyone and will resurrect anger in others, while reminding audiences change is sorely needed when it comes to incarcerated felons, black men and race relations in America.

Frequently showing that not all is as it appears to be on the surface...Monsters and Men is an impressive debut feature.

It's frustrating yet authentic and not the first time that director Reinaldo Marcus Green has taken on the subject of racial bias in the law enforcement community.

A smart and refreshing look at the race, masculinity and police brutality in 2018 - do the right thing and see this film.

A thoughtful, ambitious and keenly-judged feature debut from Reinaldo Marcus Green that deals with the ricocheting effect of a black man being gunned down by police officers.

It sets itself apart, though, by not dramatizing the issues themselves but rather focusing on the individual fallouts felt by those in the afflicted demographic.

Gripping throughout, this work of profound cinema should be seen, savored and celebrated.
