Green's directing clearly wants me to breathe their air and live their lives. But his writing keeps everything frustratingly distant.

The ideas the film explores are worthy, but the execution is disappointing. Monsters and Men feels unfinished... The film contains the start of an important conversation, but the credits roll on an incomplete thought.

The stories, for the most part, don't resolve themselves, or they tend to tie up abruptly in a fashion that frustrates expectations without providing compensating insight.

Reinaldo Marcus Green writes and directs the unraveling stories, never bringing any of the subplots to a fitting conclusion. Cinematographer Patrick Scola's camerawork is the film's greatest asset.

Despite its ambitions, "Monsters and Men" makes its weighty subject matter feels thin and slight.

Like many films tackling socially inflammatory material, Monsters and Men is constrained by its politics.

For the people Green most hopes to engage, he hasn't given them quite enough to work with.

Monsters and Men almost feels more like a tone poem than a narrative. It's sincere and feels lived in, but it seems a bit too ephemeral in its treatment of the matters that it wants us to consider to have much impact.

It's frustrating yet authentic and not the first time that director Reinaldo Marcus Green has taken on the subject of racial bias in the law enforcement community.

It sets itself apart, though, by not dramatizing the issues themselves but rather focusing on the individual fallouts felt by those in the afflicted demographic.

Gripping throughout, this work of profound cinema should be seen, savored and celebrated.

'Monsters and Men' will go down as a Black Lives Matter film that upended the format and presented us with a direct mirror as to what black and brown folks feel during this pivotal and crucial time in our society.

While some perspectives were more valuable than others, seeing the viewpoints of tragedy from people who are typically undervalued is a gift. And we shouldn't ignore it.

It's blunt with its message without being preachy, which helps it to be effective. Even when the movie leans into heavy-handedness, Green skillfully pulls us back. It's a daring task to take on as a first-time feature director and he does so admirably.

This film is meant for you to leave with your own assessment of state-sanctioned violence and it doesn't try to do the work of figuring that out for you---I appreciated that.

Superbly acted and impactful, Monsters and Men is a film about having the difficult conversations even when the answers to our questions might not be readily available.

Even with a sense of complexity, Monsters and Men still can't stop itself from dipping too far into hyperbolic moments made more powerful by artifice than they ultimately prove.

Though elements of it peek through in the other characters, Zyrick represents the only persona through which Green fully realizes his vision of self-actualization frequently denied to people of color in these narratives.
