An English smuggler's adventure. Not a very complicated plot, but entertaining just the same.

Slow swashbuckler about Redbeard, but under the direction of Fritz Lang, the film manages to have enough interesting visual touches and gothic atmosphere to make it worth watching. Stewart Granger is the lead pirate, on the run from the law and in search of a legendary diamond. It's all pretty forgettable and not terribly compelling, but if you're a Lang fan, it's worth checking out. George Sanders, Alan Napier and Jack Elam also appear in the film and Miklůs Růzsa provides a good score.

Smuggling melodrama is well crafted, but slightly pedestrian. A good cast including Stewart Granger, George Sanders and a host of familar character actors - Skelton Knaggs, Ian Wolfe

A nice story, that elicits anticipation for a wonderful ending, but sadly, disappoints. Great music. At times, there's more moral ambiguity than I care for. It's almost Robert Louis Stevenson-like. Or, perhaps, Mark Twain (like I've read either). Nice to see Alan Napier, pre-Alfred Pennyworth. It was a thrilling ride, but the conclusion doesn't quite pay-off in the way that it could have. Still worth the watch, however.

Pretty minor Lang. It does look nice though and has some fine scope framings.

Has to be the only pirate movie that takes place entirely on land...

much better than i was led to believe, certainly superior to hitchcock's 'jamaica inn' which i've never managed to finish

Barnskräckäventyr, fina färger och fullt ös.

Not unenjoyable, but not one of Lang's better films, it never seems to really get going before petering out with a not unexpected climax.

Tres beau film sur l'enfance.

On the Boundary between Gothic Horror and Swashbuckling Adventure!!

Si le film a vieilli, le gros probleme reside dans le scenario qui ne reprend que certains passages du roman initial et trahit les personnages et leur profondeur meme si la thematique du pere de substition est conservee. Frustrant.

Following four black and white noir dramas, Fritz Lang directed this two million dollar Cinemascope costume piece for MGM; a handsome film, a marginal failure, and the end of the line for Lang and the studios. His remaining American films are low budget independent crime dramas, ending a turbulent yet prolific two decades in Hollywood.

A young boy is thrust into the center of the action when his dying mother sends him to be cared for by a notorious gentleman (this is the 18th century) who secretly runs a smuggling ring and has a taste for flamenco dancers. Fritz Lang handles the action well (the boy stumbles into a tomb, finds a lost diamond, watches sword and gunplay) and the sets and cinematography can be cool. There's even George Sanders.

A decent adventure tale, dragged down by the lack of a compelling central character. Jon Whiteley as the Dickensian child is pretty much empty as a character, and Stewart Granger just doesn't have seem to have any leading man chops. I wish there'd been more of George Sanders, who's always a delight. The color widescreen photography provides a few striking moments, but more often it's awash in dreary shades of brown. I also found the movie slightly confusing at times, as the relationships between some of the main characters were murky. Overall, it's passable as "brain off" entertainment, but not much more than that. Another disappointment from Lang's later career.
