Reactions will be split down the middle, depending on the viewer's endurance for tough material, but no one can say the filmmaker didn't achieve what he set out to.

Mother's Day is distinguished, at least, by De Mornay's porcelain-smile lampoon of castigating matriarchy.

By the film's climax, it's laid waste to the majority of its cast, which will repulse some viewers, but stand as something of an attraction to others.

Rebecca De Mornay proves she's still got the superior chill factor to scare the living daylights out of you.

Too many characters and plot twists dilute the intensity of Mother's Day but there is no denying the effectiveness of De Mornay's ferocious performance.

Speaking in a tone of calm reason as she ratchets the terror up another notch, De Mornay's Mother hovers on the edge of pitch-dark black comedy without ever descending into camp. A screen psycho to match The Hand That Rocks the Cradle's nanny-from-hell.

It's not hard to see the hand of director Darren Lynn Bousman at work here. Having directed three of the Saw sequels, he knows his way around the infliction of pain.

[DeMornay] delights and startles with a vicious portrayal of familial cruelty and wanton bloodlust.

[DeMornay transforms] a dodgily wired script into something that at least crackles when she is on screen.

Mother's Day holds effective sequences, ramming home its (recycled) message: the animal lurks in us all.

A nasty little chiller from the Saw director with the evergreen De Mornay on top form.

Mother's Day is a very competent, home-invasion thriller, glossy to the eye, if too bloody once it gets into its rhythm.

The show for Rebecca DeMornay to flex her uncanny ability to convey a multi-layered and truly complex villainous the audience will despise in an instant...

Barely a remake of the 1980 sleaze-fest at all. That's a good thing. This is more a horror take on 'Desperate Hours,' actually.

Brutal, intense and easily one of the best thrillers I've seen in the last few years.

Director Darren Lynn Bousman always works with large ensemble casts (the Saw films, and Repo! The Genetic Opera) and his acumen shows once again with Mother's Day.

Mother's Day easily takes its place amongst the few successful remakes out there that manage to entertain while treating the audience with respect. Intense and at times shockingly violent, Mama's boys have once again made their mother very proud.
