Muhomatsu, the Rikshaw Man Photos

Movie Info

Toshiro Mifune trades samurai garb for sun-hat and sandals in Rikisha-Man. Mifune plays an impoverished, illiterate rickshaw puller in the Japan of the early 20th century. Preferring to stay aloof from the rest of humanity (he has been knocked around rather badly in life), Mifune is nonetheless touched by the plight of a young boy whose soldier father has been killed. In acting as surrogate father to the boy, Mifune falls in love with the lad's mother (Hideko Takamine). But the woman is far, far above the rickshaw man's social class, and Mifune is tragically denied the happiness he so richly deserves.

Critic Reviews for Muhomatsu, the Rikshaw Man

  • The ending... is cornier than anything even Hollywood would dare; but there is some pretty geometric photography with wheels and fireworks, and a good deal of homely and exportable charm.
