A great achievement of Hong Kong New Wave of 1980s. Patrick Tam is known as the director that Wong Kar-Wai publicly names as the director by whom he gets influenced most. Calm storytelling and fresh composition of scenes and shots by Patrick Tam are very much recognizable in Wong Kar-Wai's early films. Tam displays his those great techniques very well in this film. Slow-mo and stop-mo are very effective to tell characters' mentalities and to put action sequences into a good rhythm. It's Tam's ability to make this common melodramatic story up to a stylish action drama. Tony Leung in this film is still young, but he shows his capability. Kenny Bee and Joey Wang are both good choices for their roles.

Both a date movie and action movie, something you could only find in Hong Kong back in the day. There are some flat spots here and there, but is worth a check just to see Gordon Liu playing a triad scumbag.

A retired triad member botches an important assignment and is captured by his boss. Joey Wong stars as his daughter who becomes the mistress to another triad boss in order to save him, forcing her to abandon her lover in doing so. Things get out of hand when her lover, played by Kenny Bee, comes back from hiding and Joey wants to leave HK with him. Tony Leung stars as mob underling who is good friends with Joey. A very good heroic bloodshed film, with excellent performances by Tony Leung, Joey Wang, and Gordon Liu who shines as a filthy rapist triad member. The cinematography by Chris Doyle is amazing as always. The final gunfight is very intense and emotional truths are aplenty. Un Grande Filme!
