Famous actor Paul Dano comes to Herman in a dream, convincing him to make his feature film "Bear Naked Amazonians from Mars." If he meets the deadline, the film will take Best Feature at South by Southwest, making Herman an international celebrity. This irreverent and hilarious tribute to independent filmmaking functions as both a step-by-step guide and a cautionary tale with a farcical bent.

My Movie Starring Paul Dano truly hyperbolizes the process of bringing a film from idea to the screen. The chaos, family issues, funding shenanigans, and Herman’s entire existence all could carry a lesson for future filmmakers. Go to Full Review

Director Joe Bartone captures the harsh realities of independent filmmaking. Here, he delivers an unvarnished product that, despite its penchant for laughs, is a serious account of just how hard it is to make art! Go to Full Review

My Movie Starring Paul Dano captures the beauty of coming together to create, even if what you create never sees the light of day, in an infectious way. Go to Full Review

While My Movie Starring Paul Dano isn't a perfect film, it sure is a perfectly entertaining film. Go to Full Review

While a lot of films about filmmaking tend to be cynical and arch, this film is unapologetically sweet-natured toward its cast of oddballs and what it takes to get a movie made, whether or not the end result is good. Go to Full Review

Simina M @Siminam Aug 15 Unrelentingly funny, highly entertaining, and ridiculously absurd, My Movie Starring Paul Dano is, according to its creator, Joe Bartone, a tribute to the willful ignorance of independent filmmaking found in the late '70s in New York City. Developed through open discussions with the cast at the reading table, the mockumentary follows a delusional and fame-starved indie director, Herman Rumowicz, through the process of making his very first feature movie starring Paul Dano. Watching it months after the outrageous remarks Tarantino has made about Dano, My Movie Starring Paul Dano feels like an absurd but delicious retribution. It’s like Joe Bartone sensed what was to come and made this movie as a statement in support of Paul Dano. I have yet to see a feature film centered around Tarantino, with his actual name in the title. You can read the whole review on Incluvie! See more Gabriel G @3thingsaboutit Aug 7 A Scrappy, Hilarious Love Letter to Indie Filmmaking Directed by Joe Bartone, My Movie Starring Paul Dano is a wacky, self-aware comedy mockumentary that dives headfirst into the chaotic, brutal reality of no-budget indie filmmaking. The absurd premise follows Herman Rumowicz, a struggling director who believes a dream-visitation from actor Paul Dano has tasked him with creating a sci-fi film—Bear Naked Amazonians from Mars—to win big at SXSW. What unfolds is a bizarre, over-the-top journey of a filmmaker trying to pull off the impossible with zero resources, clinging to the desperate hope that Dano will magically appear to star in his masterpiece. Those who appreciate scrappy, unapologetically weird cinema, this project is a heartwarming triumph. It stands as a genuine testament to the grit of independent artists, delivering an entertaining experience that proves you do not need millions of dollars to make something memorable. See more Vik S @RT94500483 Jul 30 what a wild smorgasbord of a film; inventive, unruly, constantly surprising…loved the way the documentary elements slowly emerged, the tribute and valentine to indie film, and how it ended up being such a Trojan horse (to use a term of now!)….quietly sneaking in with real emotional weight. Wild, playful, unexpectedly moving! See more Joe B @JoeyScorsese Jun 22 This movie is indie filmmaking at its purest. It reminded me of CLERKS. It's a fun off the wall look on how creative passion drives a soul. Fun to watch. It definitely looks like the filmmakers had fun shooting it! See more Linny L @LinnyVH Jun 13 My Movie Starring Paul Dano is definitely well worth the watch. Multiple times but that's me. I loved the opening watching them trudging up the hill, commenting. What a great start. Funny and endearing throughout. Loved the story, the characters, the way it was presented. And love not being able to predict where a film is going. I highly recommend it! See more Frank V @Drumhead69 Jun 13 I thought this movie about a filmmaker making a B movie film against all odds was hysterical. The characters were warm and likable. The situation is totally believable and the madcap adventure and feel good pay off at the end really rounded out this story. I’ve watched it three times. It’s pretty laugh out loud. I can’t wait to see more!! See more Read all reviews
