Evanna Lynch shines in this whimsical road trip film that has a compelling backstory.
My Name Is Emily is in many respects an average and in several respects a kind of clichéd and frayed coming-of-age movie.
Might just charm you into submission.
"My Name is Emily" believes firmly and vigorously in life's hidden joys and our ability to rearrange our thinking to accept it, but its own preciousness proves too steep an obstacle.
My Name Is Emily gets lighter as it goes along, releasing tension and pretension for a pleasant, routine ride.
My Name is Emily is touching in its depiction of the irrepressible bonds of family and funny in its relating of being a socially awkward, weird teenager. It mourns loss but ultimately celebrates life.
Fitzmaurice is telling a tale that is not particularly new or interesting, but he seems to be imploring us to enjoy the sensations of the physical self while we can.
While Emily's pseudo-intellectual ramblings does detract from the movie's charm and authenticity, it doesn't entirely negate what is otherwise a poignant, stirring story.
A sweetly written story about love and the bonds it forms, "My Name is Emily" succeeds in part thanks to a fine cast of young actors
Fitzmaurice's...smart script and nuanced direction entitle My Name Is Emily to take its place beside such coming-of-age films as Sixteen Candles and Stand By Me.
A wise, tender, heartfelt and captivating journey that's well worth taking.
Takes its sweet time before audiences can connect to it in the way the filmmaker intended, but ultimately the emotional content of the last act wins you over.
