Inspector Chan Kwok-Wing (Jackie Chan) was once the shining star of the Hong Kong police force. But that all changed when his unit was slaughtered by a merciless gang of bank robbers -- and Chan turned to the bottle to drown his grief. Now, a year later, a soused Chan is dragged out of his rut by a new partner, Frank Cheng (Nicholas Tse). Together, they hit the streets to redeem Chan's reputation by going after those responsible for the deaths of his fellow officers.

Audience Reviews for New Police Story (San ging chaat goo si)

I saw this film over a month ago, and never had a chance to write a review. Well, now I am going to rectify that, and write few lines regarding considerably darker reboot of the Police Story series. This action film is directed by Benny Chan, and Jackie Chan as a star did everything possible for this movie to be a success. But, the New Police Story relies much more on drama than the comedic elements of its predecessors, and that was a little bit difficult task for the actor who is the best using action and humour combination. Even the beginning of the film is unusually different with police Inspector Chan Kwok-wing drinking one whiskey after another, and later, collapsing in an alley, to be found by a stranger, played by Nicholas Tse. The timeline then moves back a year, to show the heroics of Inspector Chan, as he disguises himself as a news cameraman in order to subdue a victim of man holding a victim of woman hostage in Central... Jackie Chan was standardly good as a Senior Inspector Chan Kwok Wing, Nicholas Tse in the same category as Frank Cheng Siu-fung, while Daniel Wu as Joe Kwan with Charlene Choi as Sa Sa and Samuel Pang as Sam Wong Sum were above the average. This is a movie for Jackie Chan fans, massive explosions and incredible stunts. For some this was Jackie Chan's real comeback. It was fun to watch, fast paced when the action was on, but still had some substance. However, I cannot say that this was one of Jackie Chan's better films - he plays the burned-out Inspector Wing, whose motivation died when the rest of his police team was wiped out at the hands of a wily and brutal new gang, with no passion, and lots of skills.

Jackie reboots the Police Story franchise and things go awry. The original movies shined because they were a mix of action/comedy that really blends well with Chan's comical acting; a staple style in his work that any fan can vouch for. The reach for emotional realism might be a good endeavor in theory but the conflicts that take place just get littered with plot holes to a point where you can't take anyone in this film seriously. Combined with a cast of unconvincing villains and support roles, we end up with a poor mix-mash of HK styled drama and silly 1v1 beat-ehm-ups.

Except for the dufus who plays his new replacement partner, this is WONDERFUL : ) It's Jackie Chan to begin with, so, really, we should just watch it even we think poorly of it in the end. But on the side of arguing that it's worth watching, no matter how good or bad it might be -- Oh, well that's the side of the argument I sit on -- so please just go ahead and watch this one. It really is one of Jackie Chan's best acting jobs -- I think.
And you are actually reading this?
K-den! I might be wrong . . . But you all can be the ultimate judges : )
Not to mention that IT IS Jackie Chan, so why haven't you all seen it already? : )

Awesome, totally awesome, high flying high octane overload. A must see event for any martial arts enthusiast. What this police captain went theough to take down this crime spree gang...was so intense that some of the stunts performed should and can never be duplicated. Jackie Chan is king!
